Planning a trip to Thailand? Our Thailand maps will visually help you figure out the best places to visit, how to get around, and how to arrange your itinerary as per your interests and schedule.

Thailand Location Map: Where is Thailand?

Thailand sits at the heart of Southeast Asia. It neighbors Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar, and Malaysia, with 1- to 2-hour flights. So many travelers combine them in one trip.

Thailand Cities & Islands Map: Best Places to Visit

A classic first-time trip to Thailand usually starts with Bangkok and Chiang Mai, then adds one of the main islands for beach time.

If you want to explore beyond the classic route, consider adding places like Chiang Rai for authentic hilltribe life, Kanchanaburi for WWII history, or Khao Sok National Park for its best rainforest scenery.

Thailand Islands Map: How to choose the best one

If you want iconic beach time with minimal planning, start with Phuket, Koh Samui, or Krabi.

  • Choose Phuket if flight access and island day trips matter most.
  • Koh Samui, if you prefer a calmer, resort-led stay;
  • Krabi, if you enjoy outdoor activities at a lower cost.

For a quick island escape from Bangkok, Koh Samet is the easiest option, quieter than Pattaya and best for short beach breaks.

Many islands naturally pair for easy trips: Phuket with Phi Phi, Koh Racha, Krabi, or Koh Lanta; Samui with Koh Phangan and Koh Tao; Khao Chang with Khao Kood.

Looking for parties? Koh Phangan hosts the famous Full Moon Party and lively beach vibes.

Thailand International Travel Map

Most international flights arrive in Bangkok (BKK or DMK).

From Bangkok, nearby countries like Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos are usually within 1–2 hours by air, while major Asian hubs such as Singapore or Hong Kong are around 3–6 hours away.

Long-haul flights to Europe or Australia typically take 10 hours or more, which is why Bangkok is often used as the main international gateway.

Phuket also receives limited international flights, mainly from Asia and the Middle East, making it a possible alternative entry point for beach-focused trips.

Thailand Cities Travel Map

Thailand travel is built around three main hubs.

  • Bangkok is the busiest one, handling most international and domestic routes.
  • In the south, Phuket comes next.
  • In the north, Chiang Mai anchors most regional travel.

For moving between regions, flying is by far the fastest option.

Flights between Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and Phuket usually take just 1–2 hours.

That said, direct flights from northern Thailand to southern islands are limited and sell out fast, so booking three months ahead is strongly recommended.

Within each region, the travel style changes.

In the north and central Thailand, road travel is common—slower, but often part of the experience, like the scenic drive from Mae Hong Son to Chiang Mai or the classic train ride from Bangkok to Kanchanaburi.

In the south, island travel depends on ferries and speedboats, so it's important to allow buffer time. Flights mainly connect major gateways such as Phuket, Koh Samui, and Krabi.

This map helps you quickly judge travel time between Thai cities, which is one of the biggest planning questions for first-time visitors.
