Full Moon Party in Koh Phangan 2026: Dates, Tickets & Tips

Written by Rita Updated Mar. 12, 2026

Every full moon night, Haad Rin Beach on Koh Phangan in Thailand turns into a massive EDM playground. You'll see tens of thousands on the sand, glowing neon body paint, fire shows, and non-stop beats. This is the iconic Full Moon Party.

What started as a small backpacker gathering in the 1980s has evolved into Thailand's most famous global party brand. For many travelers, experiencing this moonlit madness is a true "bucket list" item.

In this guide, I'll walk you through the 2026 party dates, the best time to go, how to get to the island, plus practical tips so you can get ready for a once-in-a-lifetime party night.

The Full Moon Party in Thailand: Quick Facts

  • Location: Haad Rin Beach, Koh Phangan
  • Entrance Fee: 200 THB (usually includes a wristband + a small drink/Red Bull)
  • Time: Every full moon night (Check the 2026 calendar below)
  • Getting there: You'll need to transfer via Koh Samui or Surat Thani
  • Scale: Tens of thousands, with Christmas & New Year being the busiest
  • Best For: If you love nightlife, EDM, and socializing, or want a "once-in-a-lifetime" extreme beach party.

When Is the Full Moon Party in 2026?

The Full Moon Party follows the lunar cycle, so the date changes every month rather than staying on a fixed calendar day.

Most years feature 12 parties. However, if a month has two full moons, you get 13! For instance, in May 2026, there are two full moons, so there will be two parties that month.

If the full moon falls on a major Buddhist holiday (a dry day), the party might be moved 1–2 days earlier or later. So always double-check the dates on the official website before booking.

Which 2026 Full Moon Party Should You Go To?

  • If you want the biggest, wildest Full Moon Party, go for the New Year's Eve edition.

The beach will be at its absolute peak. You'll feel the energy of a world-class party: tens of thousands dancing, counting down, and watching fireworks. It's definitely a bucket list tick.

  • If you prefer it lively but not shoulder-to-shoulder packed, January to April is a sweet spot.

The weather is usually the most stable of the year, meaning better chances of seeing the full moon and sunrise. The beach is still packed, but you can move around and dance more leisurely.

  • If you care about weather and overall experience, watch out for the wettest months (Oct–Nov).

Expect more showers and clouds, sometimes hiding the full moon or sunrise, which can slightly dampen the party vibe.

What If You Miss the Full Moon Party

Don't be too disappointed if your travel dates don't align perfectly with the full moon.

On Koh Phangan, the Full Moon Party is really just the peak of "Full Moon Week." You can still find various parties with different styles in the days before and after. Many music lovers actually prefer these smaller, more atmospheric events.

  • Jungle Experience

If you love techno or house, this is an underground outdoor jungle party with a much more intimate vibe. Typically held 1–2 days before the Full Moon Party, most travelers treat it as a warm-up party before the Full Moon Party

  • Half Moon Festival

A long-standing jungle festival in Ban Tai. It usually happens about a week before and after the full moon.

The stages, lighting, and sound are more professional, though it's smaller (2k–4k people) and pricier (around 2,700 THB for a night party).

  • Eden Party(Free)

For a "hidden gem" experience, head to Eden at Haad Yuan, usually on Saturday nights. It focuses on underground music and draws a more mature, chill crowd.

Getting there is half the fun – you either take a boat from Haad Rin Beach or hike through the jungle (trekking at night is not recommended!).

Where Is the Full Moon Party Held?

The real Full Moon Party happens in only one place: Haad Rin Beach on Koh Phangan. It is a 30-minute boat ride from Koh Samui and about 50 minutes from Koh Tao.

You might hear about "Full Moon Parties" in Phuket or Krabi. If you just want a similar vibe, these can be smaller alternatives.

I've been to the party with my friends at Paradise Beach in Phuket—it has the neon paint, fire shows, and buckets, and it's lively, but it's nowhere near Haad Rin's scale. It feels more like a beach club theme night. For the true 10,000-person frenzy, Haad Rin is where you need to be.

Do you need tickets for the Full Moon Party?

Yes. Entry costs 200 THB/ US$6, paid at the entrance to Haad Rin Beach only. You'll receive a neon wristband—no need to buy tickets online.

This fee goes toward beach cleaning and infrastructure. You'll still pay separately for food, drinks, and extra activities, so keep that in mind for your budget.

What Is the Schedule of the Full Moon Party in Koh Phangan?

There's no official schedule, because everything runs continuously through the night.

It starts at sunset and goes until the next sunrise. You can join in whenever you like, based on your energy and interests.

Here's a typical timeline and how you might want to use each time slot:

  • 20:00: People start trickling onto the beach. It's chill—perfect for photos, getting your neon paint done, and grabbing your first bucket.
  • 22:00: The beach gets lively. Stages start filling up; pick a music zone you like and "set up camp.
  • 23:00–02:00: Peak Party. This is the wildest time. Music, fire shows, and crowds hit their limit. At midnight, they light the massive "FULL MOON PARTY" fire sign.
  • 03:00–05:00: The crowd thins out, leaving the hardcore night owls.
  • After Sunrise: Music still pumps from a few speakers. Watch the sunrise over the ocean before heading back to sleep.

If you hate crowds, arrive before 21:00 to explore and take photos, then retreat to a quieter bar or balcony during the peak hours. You can totally treat this as a "1–2 hour experience" if you prefer.

What Are the Things to Do at the Full Moon Party in Koh Phangan?

At Koh Phangan's Full Moon Party, you can dance along to DJ beats, cover yourself in neon paint, carry a bucket drink through the crowd, and party until sunrise.

Here's how you can get the most out of it:

1. Dance Across the Whole Beach

There isn't just one stage; the entire beach is lined with over a dozen of them. Every few dozen meters, the genre changes—you can hit EDM, Psytrance, House, Techno, Hip-hop, and Reggae all in one night.

If you love the mainstream hype, set up camp at the Main Stage and lose yourself in the crowd; for edgier underground beats, head south to Techno/Trance; when you need a breather, the northern Reggae Corner is your chill spot.

2. Get Covered in UV Neon Body Paint

Neon Hats for the Full Moon Party

This is a classic tradition. In the dark, the neon blues, greens, and pinks glow under the UV lights. It creates a visual spectacle that's hard to replicate anywhere else.

You can hire an artist for intricate designs on beach stalls or buy paint to graffiti each other with friends—turn yourself into the brightest party king or queen.

Tip: Wear a tank top or T-shirt you don't mind ruining—this paint is notoriously hard to wash out!

3. Grab the Infamous Bucket

The "Bucket" is the signature drink. It's exactly what it sounds like: a small, colorful plastic bucket filled with Thai rum (Sang Som), Red Bull, and soda. They usually cost between 200 and 350 THB.

You can pick your preferred mix at the roadside shops on your way to the beach (much cheaper than inside the beach!). Don't forget photos—it's an iconic Full Moon Party experience!

Tip: These are incredibly strong. Share one with a friend or sip slowly so you don't "black out" before sunrise!

4. Watch Fire Shows & Performances

Fire Shows on the Full Moon Party

At the Full Moon Party, you've got to see the fire shows.

You'll feel the heat and be dazzled up close when professional fire dancers spin flaming hoops and batons on the sand.

The most adrenaline-pumping part is the Fire Skipping Rope. It's that "dangerous but thrilling" moment everyone talks about.

At midnight, a 6–7 meter fire structure is lit, and the whole beach explodes with sound, flames, and music—a true party frenzy.

Tip: For safety, don't try fire skipping or get too close to fire dancers. I've seen someone burn their foot—it's not worth it.

5. Catch the Sunrise on Haad Rin Beach

Staying until sunrise is the ultimate goal for many. The beach faces due east, and you'll get a stunning view. Watching the sun rise while the music is still playing is a truly magical moment.

How to Get to Koh Phangan for the Full Moon Party?

Koh Phangan has no airport, so the final leg of your journey will always be by ferry or speedboat.

For most travelers, there are three main routes: Koh Samui (fastest), Surat Thani (cheapest), or Koh Tao (if island hopping).

If it's your first time in Thailand, we recommend the hassle-free Koh Samui route.

From Koh Samui (Fastest & Easiest)

If you fly into Koh Samui, the transfer is quick and easy.

From there, ferries and speedboats take 30–60 minutes to reach Koh Phangan. The airport is also only 15–30 minutes from the main piers, such as Bangrak or Maenam, so you can usually reach the island within 2 hours of landing.

Boats from Samui run more frequently than the other routes, giving you greater flexibility in departure times.

Some boats—like the Haad Rin Queen—even drop you directly at Haad Rin Beach, where the Full Moon Party takes place. So you can skip the usual taxi ride from Thong Sala Pier, a big plus for Samui starters.

Tips: Direct Haad Rin boats like Haad Rin Queen only run 3–4 times per day during daylight. It's smart to book 1–2 weeks ahead, especially for full moon nights.

If you're planning to return to Koh Samui the same night, make sure to pre-book your return boat or round-trip tours.

Because regular ferries stop running between midnight and 5 a.m., and last-minute tickets often sell out quickly or spike in price.

From Surat Thani (Cheapest)

If you're traveling on a budget, coming via Surat Thani is the cheapest route.

You can fly in, or take a cheaper train or long-distance bus from major Thai cities. If you've been traveling in Phuket, Krabi, or Khao Sok National Park, the drive is about 3–4 hours.

While this route takes at least 4 hours longer than coming from Samui, it's much friendlier on your wallet (e.g., from Bangkok you save at least $80). That's why many budget travelers prefer this path.

Once you get to Surat Thani, head to Donsak Pier, which has the most frequent ferries to Koh Phangan. To make your life easier, book a bus + ferry combo ticket, so you don't have to worry about finding the pier or haggling for transfers.

Note: Last boat is 18:00; factor in 1.5 hours from the airport to the pier, so arrive in Surat by 2 pm.

From Koh Tao (Only If You're Already There)

A lot of travelers put together a classic Gulf of Thailand island-hopping route: Koh Tao → Koh Phangan → Koh Samui. Dive in Koh Tao, hit the Full Moon Party in Phangan, and end with a relaxing vacation in Samui.

If you're already on Koh Tao, reaching Koh Phangan is easy. High-speed ferries run several times daily, and the trip takes about 1–1.5 hours.

However, if the Full Moon Party is your only goal, it's usually not worth detouring to Koh Tao just for the transfer, as it adds several extra hours of travel from Koh Samui or Surat Thani.

Where to Stay for the Full Moon Party in Koh Phangan

Most party-goers choose to stay on either Koh Phangan or Koh Samui.

If you want to head straight back to your hotel to rest after the party or explore other highlights on Koh Phangan, staying on the island is more convenient.

But if you only want a quick party experience and prefer more comfortable or luxury hotel choices, we strongly recommend staying on Koh Samui.

Staying in Koh Phagan

Many first-timers want to stay right in Haad Rin, because they can step straight into the party. However, unless you're a hardcore party animal who plans to stay in the core all night, we usually don't recommend it.

The music blasts until sunrise, so getting proper sleep is almost impossible. Prices also double during the full moon (e.g., Explora Koh Phangan normally ~US$100, jumps to US$240+), and many hotels require a minimum stay of 2–3 nights. Accommodation is mostly simple beach bungalows and party hostels — comfort level is average.

If you want a balance of party access, budget, and peace, Baan Tai is a much better middle ground.

It's just a 10-minute ride from Haad Rin, so you can easily hit the party or the night markets and enjoy the nearby beaches without the 24/7 noise. Just be aware that the price spikes and minimum stay requirements are similar to Haad Rin. If you stay here, Chantaramas Resort & Spa is a solid recommendation.

If you prioritize beautiful beaches and resort vibes, consider the northeast coast at Thong Nai Pan Noi or Thong Nai Pan Yai.

They are home to the island's best beaches and luxury resorts like Panviman Resort and Anantara Rasananda. Price hikes here are the smallest. You can enjoy a luxury resort vibe by day and take a boat to Haad Rin for the party at night—getting the best of the Full Moon Party and a good night's sleep.

Stay in Koh Samui

If you want more comfort and better value, stay on Koh Samui.

For the same budget, you'll get nicer hotels and don't have to worry about full-moon price surges. For example, for the price of Explora Koh Phangan during the party, you could stay at a premium brand like Amari Koh Samui.

If you choose Samui, we recommend Bophut Beach or Chaweng Beach because they are close to the piers. You'll be back in your room 10–20 minutes after landing back on the island.

Note: On full-moon nights or during the rainy season, the sea can be choppy. Taking a speedboat after drinking is challenging (many people call it a nightmare!).

Travel Tips for the Full Moon Party

  • Watch out for broken glass

The beach will be littered with broken bottles. Wear sneakers or closed-toe shoes at all times; do not go barefoot or wear flip-flops.

  • Stay away from fire ropes and fire dancing

These are high-risk activities for injuries. Alcohol impairs distance judgment, so watch and take photos from a distance.

  • Book your stay at least 1 month in advance.

During the party period, hotels in Koh Phangan and Koh Samui usually require a minimum stay (2–3 nights), and prices will jump. Many people who try to stay for just one night find that walk-ins are impossible to get.

  • During the rainy season, arrive on the island early.

If your trip falls during the peak of the rainy season (usually Oct–Nov), the sea can get rough, leading to ferry delays or cancellations. I suggest arriving in Koh Phangan a day early, or at least by afternoon, to ensure you make it to Haad Rin on time.

  • Pre-book your return boat or transfer.

Boat tickets leaving Koh Phangan in the early hours after the party sell out fast. If you're heading back to Koh Samui or another area, book your speedboat or hotel transfer in advance so you aren't stuck without a ride when you're exhausted.

FAQ about Full Moon Party in Thailand

1. Is the Full Moon Party Worth It?

If you're into nightlife, electronic music, and beach vibes—or if you just want to tick off the "world's most famous beach party" from your list—it is absolutely worth it. For many backpackers and young travelers, this is one of the most unforgettable nights in Southeast Asia.

Just a heads-up: at its peak, the atmosphere is wild, and the beach gets incredibly crowded. If you don't like tight crowds, you can leave earlier or watch the scene from a bar terrace overlooking the beach.

2. Is the Full Moon Party more expensive than usual?

The entrance fee and boat tickets stay pretty much the same year-round. What really gets pricier is the accommodation: hotels near Haad Rin usually double their rates for the Full Moon. However, if you stay further away from the main beach, you won't see such a dramatic price hike.

3. Is the Full Moon Party only for young people?

The core crowd is definitely 20–35-year-old travelers from Europe and the US, but you'll see plenty of people in their 30s, 40s, and beyond. As long as you love music and a party atmosphere, there's no "age limit"—even families with kids sometimes stop by early on.

If you want to avoid the "typical drunk backpacker" scene, you might prefer the Jungle parties with better music or the Eden/Guy's Bar area in Haad Yuan.

4. What to wear for the Full Moon Party? (Dress Code)

There's no official dress code, but a few unwritten rules help you blend in and stay comfortable.

  • Bright Colors & Neon: White or neon clothing is the most popular because it stands out under UV lights and pairs perfectly with neon body paint.
  • Light & Breathable: Think T-shirts, tanks, shorts, beach skirts, or light sundresses. You'll be dancing and moving all night!
  • Protective Footwear: Wear sneakers or closed-toe sandals to protect against broken glass or fire-dance mishaps. Going barefoot or wearing flip-flops is not recommended.
  • Something You Can Ruin: Drinks, water, and body paint will probably end up on your clothes, so don't wear your favorite expensive outfit.
